PDF QR Code Generator
Upload a PDF — menu, manual, brochure, event guide — and get a dynamic QR code. Scan opens the document instantly in any browser. Replace the file later without touching the printed code.
A PDF QR code is not just a link. It is a permanent gateway to your document that you control. Print it on 10,000 menus and update the PDF next season. The code on every table already points to the new version.
What It Is
What is a PDF QR code?
A PDF QR code is a dynamic QR code backed by a short redirect link. You upload a PDF to Qrinly, and the system hosts it at a unique short URL. The QR code encodes that short URL — not the file itself. When scanned, the redirect delivers the PDF to the user's browser or phone. Because the QR code encodes the redirect rather than the file location, you can replace the PDF from your dashboard at any time. Every existing printed code immediately serves the new document. Managed redirect scans can be recorded: device type, country, city, and timestamp.
Format recommendation
Why PDF is the best format for documents and menus
You can link a QR code to any URL — a Google Doc, a web page, an image. But for print use cases like menus, brochures, and manuals, PDF is the most reliable choice by a wide margin.
- Consistent layout across every device — PDF renders the same on iOS, Android, and desktop. A Google Doc or web page can reflow, wrap, or display differently depending on screen size and browser.
- Works without an account — anyone can open a PDF. Google Docs requires a sign-in or sharing permission if the settings are wrong. PDF has no access issues.
- No broken formatting — fonts, columns, images, and page layout are fixed in a PDF. A linked web page can change or break. A PDF stays exactly as designed.
- Cached by the browser — once opened, a PDF is available even with a poor connection. Web pages and Google Docs depend on live server responses.
- Print-ready — if a guest wants to print the menu or guide, the PDF will print correctly. Web pages and Docs often print with navigation bars and broken layouts.
Can I use something other than a PDF?
Yes — the QR code itself does not care what it links to. You can link to a URL, a Google Doc, an image, or any web address. But each alternative has trade-offs worth understanding before choosing.
Website link
Link to any publicly accessible web page. The page opens in the browser on scan.
⚠ Works well for web-based content. Not ideal for print documents — page layout may reflow on mobile and the visual experience is harder to control.
Google Docs or Sheets
Link directly to a shared Google document.
⚠ Requires correct sharing settings — a misconfigured permission turns the QR code into a dead link. Fonts and formatting may display differently across devices.
Image link
Link to a hosted image (JPG, PNG, WebP) instead of a document.
⚠ Works for simple single-page content. Impractical for multi-page documents — menus with multiple sections, instruction manuals, or catalogues are difficult to read as a single image.
PDF vs link-based QR code
PDF QR Code
- Fixed layout — prints and renders exactly as designed
- No permissions or login required to open
- Works on every device without formatting issues
- Cached — readable even with a poor connection
- Ideal for menus, brochures, manuals, event guides
Link-based QR Code
- Flexible — can point to any page or tool
- Page UI can be updated without replacing a file
- Depends on the destination staying accessible
- Mobile layout depends on the site's design
- Ideal for campaign pages, booking tools, social profiles
Which format should you use?
Our recommendation
For most print-based use cases — menus, brochures, manuals, event guides — PDF is the most reliable and recommended option. It eliminates permission errors, renders consistently on every device, and gives you full control over how the document looks and prints.
How It Works
Step-by-step.
- 1
Create a free Qrinly account
PDF hosting requires a free account. Signing up takes under 30 seconds — email and password only.
- 2
Upload your PDF
Drag and drop your PDF file. Qrinly hosts it securely and generates a short redirect link pointing to the document.
- 3
Download the QR code
A QR code is generated automatically from the short link. Download as PNG for quick printing or SVG for high-quality, large-format print.
- 4
Print and track — then update when needed
Place the QR code on menus, packaging, or event materials. Monitor scans in your dashboard. When the document changes, upload the new version. Every printed code already points to the new file.
Real Use Cases
Concrete problems this solves.
Restaurant menu
Scenario
A restaurant prints 200 table cards with QR codes linking to the menu. The menu changes seasonally — sometimes weekly for specials.
Problem
Reprinting 200 cards every time the menu changes costs money and time. Static QR codes linked to a URL break if the URL changes.
Solution
Upload the menu PDF to Qrinly. When the menu changes, upload the new version and update the link. The QR codes on all 200 table cards already point to the new menu. No reprint.
Product manual on packaging
Scenario
A hardware company prints 50,000 boxes with a QR code linking to the product setup guide. The guide is updated after a firmware change.
Problem
50,000 boxes in circulation link to an outdated manual. The company cannot reprint them. Customer calls increase.
Solution
The QR code on each box encodes a Qrinly redirect. Upload the updated PDF. All 50,000 boxes in circulation — in warehouses, in stores, in customers' homes — now serve the updated guide.
Event programme
Scenario
A conference runs for three days. The printed programme has a QR code linking to the speaker schedule PDF. A session is cancelled on day one.
Problem
Hundreds of printed programmes are in attendees' bags. The schedule PDF is outdated. No way to recall printed materials.
Solution
Update the PDF in the Qrinly dashboard. Every attendee who scans the QR code from their programme gets the current, corrected schedule.
Real estate property brochure
Scenario
An estate agency prints flyers with a QR code linking to a property brochure PDF. The price is reduced two weeks after printing.
Problem
Thousands of flyers are posted and distributed. The brochure shows the wrong price. Calling prospects to explain is impractical.
Solution
Upload a corrected PDF to Qrinly and update the redirect. All distributed flyers now link to the brochure with the correct price.
Training materials
Scenario
An HR team prints onboarding packs with a QR code to the employee handbook. The handbook is revised quarterly.
Problem
Old handbooks are referenced by new joiners using QR codes from previous print runs. Policy compliance issues follow.
Solution
One Qrinly link, one QR code, one place to update. Every onboarding pack — from any print run — always delivers the current handbook.
Examples
What it looks like in practice.
Restaurant menu
Input
Upload: summer-menu-v3.pdf → Hosted at: qrinly.com/abc123
Output
QR code on table card → scan → PDF opens in browser → guest reads menu
When the menu changes, upload autumn-menu.pdf and update the redirect. Same QR code on every table.
Product packaging
Input
Upload: setup-guide-v1.pdf → QR code printed on 50,000 boxes
Output
Customer scans box QR → current manual opens → no attachment, no app
Upload setup-guide-v2.pdf later. All existing boxes serve the updated guide.
Event guide
Input
Upload: conference-schedule-day1.pdf → QR code in printed programme
Output
Attendee scans programme → live schedule PDF opens on phone
Update the PDF mid-event. Attendees rescanning get the corrected schedule.
Why It Matters
Print is permanent. Your content doesn't have to be.
Every time you print a QR code that points directly to a file URL, you are making a permanent commitment. If that URL changes — because you move servers, update the file, or the host goes down — every printed code breaks. The only fix is reprinting. A dynamic PDF QR code separates the printed code from the file location.
Without dynamic QR
You print the menu with a QR code that links directly to menuv1.pdf on your web server. The next season, you rename it to menuv2.pdf. Every QR code in your restaurant now returns a 404. Guests scan to empty screens. You reprint everything.
With Qrinly
The QR code on every table links to a Qrinly redirect. Update the PDF anytime from your dashboard. Every table already serves the new menu. No reprint, no downtime, no dead links.
Features
What is included.
Replace the PDF without reprinting
Upload a new version from your dashboard. Every QR code pointing to that link immediately serves the new file. The code itself never changes.
Document opens in browser — no download, no app
The PDF opens inline in Safari, Chrome, or any mobile browser. Guests do not need to install anything or receive an attachment.
Scan analytics per document
Managed redirect scans can be recorded with device type, OS, country, city, and timestamp. See total scans, unique devices, and geographic data per PDF.
Short redirect link included
Every PDF QR code is backed by a short redirect link (e.g. qrinly.com/xyz). Share the link digitally alongside the printed QR code — both point to the same document.
Secure file hosting
Qrinly hosts your PDF securely. The file is accessible only via the short link — not publicly indexed or discoverable without the link.
Works on every device
The PDF opens in the native browser on any smartphone, tablet, or desktop. No app installation required on the recipient's end.
